Description
A George III covered tureen (English, 1772) by the London silversmith partnership of Louisa Courtauld & George Cowles. The wrought silver tureen is of oval shape, the fluted cover is topped with a raised bud final, the body is decorated with leaf and bowknot festoons, rosettes medallions on either side, and lion-mask ring handles, the whole is raised on a fluted pedestal base. The tureen is engraved on one side with a crown above an oval coat of arms with the Latin motto “PER MARE TERRAS” and the Armstrong clan crest of an armor-clad arm holding a dagger on the other. The underside is impressed with a London assay mark, a lion passant, “L.C / G.C” within a quatrefoil punch, and a “R” date mark.
Louisa Courtauld (French-born, English, 1729-1807) married into one of the most famous goldsmithing families of the 18th century. After the death of her husband in 1765 Louisa continued to run the firm. From 1768 to 1777 Louisa entered into a partnership with her senior apprentice George Cowles.
