Description
A Chippendale armchair (American, c. 1770) with a maple frame and rectangular rush seat. The shaped crest-rail has grooved ears and a ruffled shell carving above an open back centering a pierced splat. The armrests end in scrolled knuckles and rest on curved supports. A loose wool cushion decorated with a blue and white geometric pattern rests on the removable rush seat. The whole is supported on four legs, the tapered square front legs are accented with two vertical bands of grooving, the rear legs are chamfered and splayed. The legs are joined by H-shaped stretchers and a single rear stretcher.
