Description
A pair of Queen Anne compass seat side chairs (American, Rhode Island or Massachusetts, c. 1770) with frames composed out of mahogany. Each has an indented crest-rail with downward sloping ears above a reverse c-scroll and diamond pierced vasiform splat. The slip seat is upholstered in black horsehair fabric and sits in an arched seat rail. The whole is raised on four legs, the front two are cabriole in shape and terminate in pad feet, the rear legs are splayed and end in block feet. The legs are joined by ring and block turned H-shaped stretchers and a single rear stretcher. One chair has modern blocks screwed into the corners of the seat frame; the other does not.
