Description
A pair of Hepplewhite side chairs (American, Providence or Hartford, CT, c. 1790-1810) composed of mahogany with slip seats covered in green moire harateen fabric. The chairs have open shield shaped backs with a scrolling pierced back splat accented near the top with two florets centering on a fluted urn. The square seat is raised on four block tapered legs, the front are straight while the rear are splayed. The legs are joined by H-shape stretchers together with a single rear stretcher. Each chair bears a Roman numeral just below the slip seat, indicating that the chairs were likely part of a dining room suite. PSNC.2216.1 inscribed with the numeral “VI” and PSNC.2216.2 with the numeral “IX.”
