Description
A Queen Anne side chair (American, possibly Newport, 1750-1770) composed of maple with a square rush seat, formerly owned by William Ellery (American, 1727-1820) a representative of Rhode Island at the Continental Congress and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The chair has a shaped crest rail above a vase-form splat and the original rush seat. The seat rail has a scallop-skirted front rail and flat-arch-skirted side rails. The whole is supported by four legs, the front two are cabriole in form and end in pad feet, the rear legs are block form and splayed at the bottom. The legs are joined by H-shaped spindle and block turned stretchers and a single rear stretcher. A square plaque adhered to the reverse of the back splat is inscribed in script “William Ellery / 1727-1820 / Signer of / Declaration of Independence.”
