Description
A Faenza majolica albarello (drug jar) (Italian, 1500-1510) of cylindrical form with a waisted neck and foot. The front of the jar is inscribed in blue “Ell Ellefrof” in a scroll banner, the ends of the scroll are shaded in manganese. The body is decorated with a stylized blue berry vine ground within ochre bands, the neck and foot are decorated with a zigzag border.
Note: This drug jar was probably designed to contain the dried ingredients of elescoph, Electuarium (also called Episcopi, Electuarium), 'The Bishop's Electuary', a purgative electuary, made from scammony, turpeth root, polypody rhizone and other ingredients.
