Description
A Louis XVI style gilt-bronze-mounted mahogany and fruitwood parquetry bureau a cylindre (rolltop desk) (French, Paris, c. 1880-1895) in the manner of Jean-Henri Riesener (French, 1734-1806). The desk has a rectangular marble top with a three-quarter pierced gallery above a cylinder roll top. The roll top is centered with an inlaid musical trophy medallion of a lyre, sheet music, trumpets, and flowers, the medallion is set against a lozenge (trellis) parquetry ground. The top opens to reveal three open compartments above six drawers and a sliding gold-tooled leather writing surface. The frieze is set with a rectangular lozenge parquetry long drawer and two flanking short drawers with keyholes above a slight kneehole. The sides have conforming parquetry panels. The whole is raised on four square tapered legs ending in acanthus-sheathed sabots.
