Description
A bronze commemorative medal (American, 1936) made by Tiffany & Co. in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company. The medal has a low relief face featuring a kneeling miner with pickax and lighted helmet inspecting a lump of coal against a sunburst landscape. The reverse is inscribed "Eureka" and the dates "1886-1936" in banners with a Berwind-White coal-fed steamship and factory against a ground of laurel. Beneath the lower banner it is signed “TIFFANY & CO.” The coin is housed in a square gilt-wood frame lined with red velvet.
The Berwind-White Coal Mining Company was founded by Edward J. Berwind, the owner of The Elms, his brother Charles Berwind, and Congressman Allison White of Pennsylvania.
