Description
A suite of four grayscale overdoor paintings (dessus-de-porte) entitled "Metamorphoses" (French, c. 1900) by Jules Allard & Sons of Paris, in the manner of François Boucher (1703-1770) and Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre (1714-1789). The cartouche shaped scenes are installed over the doors in the ballroom of The Elms. Each depicts a different mythological scene derived from Ovid’s “Metamorphoses”:
.1 = Apollo
.2 = Leda & Jupiter
.3 = Diana and the Nymphs at The Glade
.4 = Apollo and Daphne
Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre, a former pupil of Boucher, was commissioned to paint overdoor paintings for the Château d’Asnières, the model for The Elms. His paintings focused on the legends of Leda and Io.
