Description
An English Renaissance style chest (English, 19th century) composed of mahogany, stained oak, and satinwood, with earlier antique marquetry panels. The chest is of oblong rectangular shape, with a faceted rim, and hinged lid. The ends have two square inset side panels with a marquetry inlay of winged female figures. Of the three front panels, two depict Diana and Hercules surrounded by mythical creatures, with a smaller center panel of a heraldic crest of a lion and fleur-de-lys en cartouche. Scrolled carvings of grotesque masks decorate the front corners. The whole is raised on four bun feet. The back is unfinished. Originally from Wakehurst in Newport, RI.
