Four White-Painted Chairs

Four white-painted chairs (American, late 19th century) designed by Ogden Codman, Jr. (American, 1863-1951) and attributed to the manufacturer A. H. Davenport Co., Boston and East Cambridge, MA. Done in the Louis XVI style, the side chairs have rectangular backs centered by a large, arcaded cane panel, surrounding the cane panels is a molded leaf tip border and foliate spandrels. The sides of the backs are carved with bell flowers. The shaped seats have caned panels and are carved along the seat rail with spiral ribbon, beaded, and foliate molding. The chairs stand on four tapered fluted legs with gadrooned collars and are topped by block flower-head medallions carved along the seat rail.
