A Four-fold Painted Screen

A four-fold painted screen (American, 19th century) designed by Ogden Codman, Jr. (American, 1863-1951) for use in The Breakers 2nd floor Guest Bedroom, attributed to the manufacturer A. H. Davenport Co., Boston and East Cambridge, MA. The white painted frame is made up of four panels, each with a molded border and arched top rail, the end panels are crested by a bow-knotted ribbon and the center panels are crested by a foliate wreath, the corners of the panels are decorated with block flower-head patera. The panels are fitted with painted pale green canvas decorated in white/cream tempera with pendant flowers suspended from bow-knotted ribbons and chains of stylized scrolling foliage.
