Description
An oil on canvas portrait study of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (American, 1794-1877) by Jared Bradley Flagg (American, 1820-1899). The subject is depicted at bust length facing forward and wears a black jacket with a white collared shirt and bow tie. The subject is set against an ochre ground on an unfinished canvas. The canvas is inscribed and signed along the bottom in pencil “Commodore Vanderbilt J.B. Flagg ’99 [?Prnx?]." The canvas is housed in a gilt-wood frame with foliate decoration.
