Description
A daybed and chair suite (American, late 19th century) designed by Ogden Codman, Jr. (American, 1863-1951) and attributed to the manufacturer A. H. Davenport Co., Boston and East Cambridge, MA. The suite is made up of a daybed (.1), two armchairs (.2-.3). and four side chairs (.4-.7) composed out of carved walnut and covered in red/rose floral damask.
.1 – The daybed has a fully upholstered rectangular head and foot board, molded armrests carved with foliage resting on curved supports, a long-upholstered seat, and tasseled braided fringe along the bottom rail. The daybed is supported by four short, square paneled legs with gadrooned collars and shaped toes, the legs are joined by an elongated H-shaped stretcher.
.2-.3 – The pair of armchairs are of Louis XIV/Baroque design, with a tall rectangular back, curved armrests carved with foliage resting on curved supports, and a rectangular stuff-over seat. The back and seat are fully upholstered, tasseled braided fringe hangs from the bottom of both. The chairs stand on four block tapered paneled legs with gadrooned collars and shaped toes. The legs are joined by a curved H-shaped stretcher caved along the center with a stylized shell flanked by scrolling foliage.
.4-.7 – The four side chairs are of similar design to the armchairs in the suite.
