A Louis XVI Style Carved Giltwood Salon Suite

A Louis XVI style carved giltwood salon suite (French, c. 1895) from the workshops of Jules Allard and Sons, Paris, for use in the Ladies Reception Room at The Breakers. The suite is composed of a canapé (.1) with an oblong oval back, a pair of fauteuils (.2-.3), and four side chairs (.4-.7) with oval backs and serpentine seats. All the pieces are covered in late 19th century Aubusson tapestry upholstery, woven with flowers and foliage on a cream ground. The furniture frames are carved with a border of beading and spiral ribbon, with the crest rail centered by trophies of crossed quivers and flambeaux torches tied by bow-knotted ribbons. The canapé and fauteuils have padded armrests with scroll ends raised on curved supports carved with an overlapping money pattern and foliage at the base. Each piece is supported by four fluted tapered legs. The front legs are surmounted by flowerhead pataterae.
