Description
A Rococo Revival carved giltwood center table (American, c. 1895) retailed by R. J. Horner & Company, NY. The gadrooned serpentine top is inset with a panel of mottled cream-colored marble. Below the top is a pierced and carved frieze with c-scrolls and foliage flanked by sprays of roses on a trellis ground. The table stands on four boldly carved cabriole legs in the form of a pair of reverse c-scrolls carved with foliage and flowers. The legs are joined by matching cruciform stretchers with a raised carved floral arrangement at center. The underside of the frieze bears a label inscribed “R. J. Horner & Co. / Furniture Makers / 61-63 W. 23rd St. NY.”
This table was originally used at the Vanderbilt’s New York City residence at 1 West 57th Street before being moved to The Breakers.
