Description
A mahogany pedestal writing table (American, 1892-1895) made by William Baumgarten & Co., NY, designed by Emile Baumgarten (American, 1865-1922) for use in The Breakers Billiard Room. The rectangular top is lined with a panel of green baize, has rounded corners, and a molded border. The front of the desk has a frieze containing three drawers with brass drop front handles, below this are two cupboards joined by a molded stretcher along the bottom. The four outer corners of the writing table are carved with monopodium lions, the inner corners are carved with columns with elaborate capitals and pendant fruiting foliage suspended from bow-knotted ribbons. The outer sides of the table are carved with central egg and dart circular medallions and spandrels. The cupboard doors are framed with a rectangular egg and dart border. The whole stands on eight bun feet.
