Description
An earthenware charger plate (French, c. 1880) made by Joseph-Théodore Deck (French, 1823-1891) and decorated by Raphaël Collin (French, 1850-1916). The charger is decorated in the neo-Renaissance style with a central bust portrait of a 16th century German soldier known as a “reitre.” The subject is depicted against a mottled blue turquoise ground. He wears a black hat trimmed with red ostrich feathers and a yellow tunic with a white ruched collar. The front of the plate is signed “R. Collin” along the bottom slit of the subject’s tunic. The reverse of the plate is marked “TH Deck” in red and inscribed “Reitre / (XVI Sicile)” in black under-glaze.
The Wetmores were known to collect ceramics by Théodore Deck. His studio produced the tiles for the fireplace surround and sideboard roundel in the Dining Room at Chateau-sur-Mer. Raphaël Collin was associated with Deck from 1872 and became one of his most prolific artists.
