Title
Two Earthenware Luncheon Plates
Date
1879
Description
Two earthenware luncheon plates (French, 1879) from the service Fleurs et Rubans designed by Félix Bracquemond (French, 1833-1914) and manufactured by Creil & Montereau. Each plate is hand-painted with an art-nouveau style floral and bird design on a white ground. The rims of the plates have a scalloped edge and have shallow impressions creating a stylized flower petal design which is outlined in a bright cobalt blue glaze. Each plate is signed with an underlined “B”, one of the know signatures of Félix Bracquemond. On the reverse the plates are impressed with “B & Cie” above an entwined “CM.” Beneath this printed in black is “CREIL / B & Cie / MONTEREAU / MODÈLE / HAVILAND & Cie / A / PARIS.” A porcelain version of the service was produced by Haviland.
