Description
A George III silver partial coffee service (English, 1802) comprised of a coffee pot (.1), sugar basket (.2), and creamer (.3). The sides of the three pieces are incised with a band of diaper work accented with leafy vines and acorns above a winged stirrup crest relating to the Johnston family of Newport and Jamaica.
.1 – The coffee pot has a hinged lid topped by a pineapple shaped finial, a black painted wood strap handle, and molded spout accented with beadwork. The underside is marked with English silver hallmarks, a lion passant, a crowned leopard head, the letter "G", and the profile of George III. It is also incised with the script monogram "CLJ" for Catherine Louise Johnston.
.2 – The sugar basket is of ovoid form with two squared fluted side handles
.3 – The creamer has a squared fluted side handle and a molded spout.
