Description
A pewter plate (American, c. 1790) made by David Melville (1755-1793) of Newport, RI. The circular plate is partially impressed on the reverse with David Melville’s touch mark, it reads "MADE IN NEWPORT / BY D : MELVILLE" above a five-lobed shell form above a field of thirteen stars. Below this it is inscribed "N. ENGLAN[D]" in a rectangular block.
