Description
A pewter plate (American, c. 1796) by Samuel (active, 1793-1800) and Thomas Melville (1764-1796) of Newport, RI. The reverse of the large circular plate is marked with two partially pressed marks of an anchor on a floral shield, the letters "T ME" can be seen above one of the shields. Below these marks are three square hallmarks, the first has the letter "T", the second the letter "M", and the third a hanging sheep.
