Description
\An English Delft blue and white drug jar (or gallipot) (London, c. 1770) of ovoid form with a tapered opening rim and base, the front of the jar is painted with a stylized label with cherubs, flowers, and topped by an eight lobed shell. The label reads "C:FLOR:AUR:." This drug jar originally belonged to Dr. William Hunter (c. 1729-1777), the father of Sen. William Hunter, former owner of Hunter House. Born in Scotland, Dr. William Hunter came to America in 1752 and established a prominent medical practice and apothecary in Newport, RI.
