Description
A Chinese export teapot and cover (Chinese, c. 1795), the teapot is of cylindrical shape with a straight spout and entwined strap handle, with raised decoration where the handle meets the body. The front of the teapot is painted at center with a gold and sepia toned eagle symbolizing the US. On the left the eagle grasps an olive branch in its claw. On the right it clutches six arrows. Over the lower portion of its body is a blue and black enamel shield with fifteen black vertical stripes against a white ground. Above the eagle’s head is a field of stars and a band of sun rays. The bottom of the teapot has a blue enamel and gilt border. The opening rim is decorated with a blue and gold star band. This is matched by the rim of the cover. The cover is topped by a raised fruit knot finial.
