Description
A colored mezzotint entitled "The Antilope Packet beating-off Le Atalante, a French Privateer, in the West-Indies" (English, dated 1797) designed and engraved by William Elmes (English, active. 1804-1816), published by John Fairburn, London. The mezzotint depicts the 1793 naval battle between the British 'Antelope', shown on the right, and French privateer 'Atalante', shown on the left, off the coast of Cuba. The Antelope successfully fought and captured the Atalante, the action is recorded in "The Royal Navy, a history" by William Laird Clowes. Beneath the image at center the mezzotint is inscribed "designed & Engraved by W. Elmes." Beneath the title it is inscribed "Published Feby. 1st, 1797, by John Fairburn, No. 146, Minories, London."
