Description
A framed portrait engraving entitled "Gov. of Plymouth Colony" (American or English, unknown date) by T. House depicting Gov. Edward Winslow (1595-1655), along with Winslow’s autograph and a note explaining its origins. Edward Winslow was a passenger on the Mayflower and severed three terms as governor of Plymouth Colony. His above autograph is dated 1639. The engraved portrait depicts him at half-length, wearing dark cloths, and holding a document in his left hand. Below his image is the Winslow coat-of-arms as well as his signature, matching the autograph above. Beneath this engraving is a note written and signed by Roderick Terry (1849-1933), a former president of the Redwood Library and Vice-President of the Newport Historical Society. The note in script reads "This Autograph of Edward Winslow was purchased by my of [illegible] in april 1906 - He bought of of an [illegible] sale of his collection, who had bought it of [illegible] the engraver; he having received it from a deceased [?] daughter of E. W. who cut it out of a book (Bible?) formerly belonging to E.W. – that it [illegible] be copied for the engraved likeness - Roderick Terry."These three documents are housed in a modern Hogarth frame.
