Description
A mezzotint portrait entitled "William Thomas, D.D. Died July 26, 1738" (English, dated 1776) by Valentine Green (English, 1739-1813), after a painting by George Powle (English, active 1764-1771). The subject, Rev. William Thomas (English, 1670-1738), is depicted at half-length facing forward in a mock oval frame. He wears a white powdered wig, is dressed in dark ecclesiastical robes, and holds a book in his right hand with a finger marking a page. Underneath the bottom edge of the image the print is inscribed "V. Green, Vigoriensis, e Sculptoribus regia Majestatis, Ari incisit." Beneath the title it is inscribed "From an Original Picture", and below this "Published Jany. 1st, 1776." The print is housed in a black painted wooden frame.
