Description
A mezzotint portrait entitled "George Washington Esq.r" (American, dated 1799) engraved by William Hamlin (American, 1772-1869), after a painting by Edward Savage (American, 1761-1817). The subject, President George Washington (1732-1799), is depicted at three-quarter length seated with his legs crossed. Washington wears a white powdered wig, a long black jacket, vest, and matching pants. His right arm rests on a table above a document. He holds the edge of this document in his left hand. The background depicts rich drapery with a column and cloud-swept landscape on the left. Beneath the image on the lower left the print is inscribed "E. Savage pinx et", opposite on the lower right it is inscribed "Wm Hamlin. Sculp. Providence." Beneath the title at center it is inscribed with the date of Washington’s death and reads "Obt. Decebr, 14th 1799. Æ 68." The print is housed in a black painted wood frame.
