Description
A mezzotint portrait entitled "Charles the First, King of Great Britain" (Dutch, c. 1695) engraved by Pieter Stevens van Gunst (Dutch, 1659-1724), after a 1638 painting by Sir Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, 1599-1641). The subject, Charles I (1600-1649), is depicted standing at full-length, wearing full armor. He stands beside a draped table with a crown and military helmet accented with a single plum. His bare left hand rests on the hilt of his sword, while his armored glove lies on the floor behind him. Inscribed beneath the title on the lower left is "A. v. Dyk pinx. 1638", at center is "Ex Muséo Sereniss. Domini de Wharton", on the right is "P .v. Gunst sculps et exc. Amstelod." The print is housed in a black painted wood frame with an interior gilt gesso border.
