Description
A cross stitch sampler (American, dated 1823) made by Elizabeth Sarah Everill of Cheltenham, PA. The sampler has a narrow beige rectangular cross stitch border surrounding a central field decorated with scattered flowers, owls, dogs, birds, crowns, stars, hearts, diamonds, a large evergreen tree, and bird bath. Along the lower section at center is a brick building, the roofline is sewn in green with the title "Hope House." To the left of the house is an apple tree flanked by a man and woman, symbolizing Adam and Eve. To the right is a large bird and dog. Below is a box sewn with a blue border, inside in blue block letters it reads "Elizabeth Sarah Everill/Works in the Year 1823/Cheltenham." The box is flanked by a pair of evergreen trees and a pair of flower filled urns.
