A hand colored lithograph entitled "Newport, R.I. in 1730" (American, dated 1884) by J.P. Newell (American, 1831-1898) and produced by J.H. Bufford’s Lith., Boston. The foreground depicts Goat Island’s Fort George situated on a grassy knoll overlooking the city of Newport with its bustling harbor and wharves. Printed along the bottom edge of the image is "FROM THE PAINTING & ON STONE BY J.P. NEWELL. ENTERED ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGRESS IN THE YEAR 1884 BY J.P. NEWELL IN THE CLERK’S OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT COURT OF THE DISTRICT OF MASS. J.H. BUFFORD’S LITH. 313 WASHN ST. BOSTON." Below this wharves and important buildings are identified by name. Below the title is printed "FROM A PAINTING IN POSSESSION OF MR. JAS. PHILLIPS." The lithograph is housed in a modern gilt-wood frame.
