Description
A Hepplewhite inlaid mahogany card table (American, c. 1799-1806) by Holmes Weaver (1769-1848) of Newport, RI. The rectangular top has cantered front corners and a conforming hinged flat top, which is supported by a gate leg when open. The conforming apron has a continuous band of horizontal satinwood inlay. The table is raised on four elegant tapered legs with conforming bands of inlay broken at the bottom with a single inlaid black band. The rear apron has a paper label inscribed in black with "Holmes Weaver Cabinet and Chair Maker Meeting Street Newport."
Holmes Weaver was born in Middletown, RI on July 24, 1769, the son of Thomas and Alice Weaver. After an apprenticeship in Boston during the 1790's he returned to Newport in 1799, opening a shop on Meeting Street where he worked until 1806. In that year he moved to the North side of Broadway where he worked until 1815. He died in Newport in February, 1848.
