Description
A Federal period George III style silver coffee pot (American, ca. 1780) attributed to Joseph and Nathaniel Richardson of Philadelphia, PA. The pot is of baluster form with curved gadrooning around the base, neck and lid. The spout is decorated with applied acanthus leaves. The pot has a wooden crooked side handle and lid finial. The body is engraved at center with an eagle with raised wings and a laurel wreath around its beak.
The piece was commissioned by Samuel Powel (1738-1793) of Philadelphia, PA. Powel served as the last mayor of Philadelphia under British rule, and the first after the Revolution.
