Description
A pewter plate (American, 1784-1793) made by David Melville (1755-1793) of Newport, RI. The reverse is stamped with Melville’s four square hallmarks, the first contains his initials, the second an anchor with four stars, the third contains a hanging sheep, and the fourth a rosette. Above these is his anchor touch-mark, which is a representation of the coat-or-arms of Rhode Island, an anchor is surrounded by the motto "IN GOD WE HOPE."
