Photograph from the 1883 Vanderbilt Fancy Dress Ball album, taken by Jose Maria Mora (Cuban, c. 1847-1926), depicting Miss Frances Swan (later Mrs. Benjamin Welles) dressed in costume for the Dresden Quadrille. In a description of the ladies' costumes for the Dresden Quadrille, the New York Times reported: "They wore wavy white satin, every appurtenance of which was of pure white. The dresses of the ladies had bouffant paniers, short sleeves and skirts, and low bodices. Their hair was powdered, and dressed high."
