Description
A PAIR OF CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY STOP-FLUTED SIDE CHAIRS (American, Newport, 1770-1785) possibly by John Goddard (1724-1785) or Daniel Goddard (b. 1747), commissioned by the merchant and financier Christopher Champlin(1731-1805) of Newport. Part of a larger suite consisting of two armchairs and eight side chairs, four other side chairs from this suite are in the Preservation Society’s Collection (PSNC.1804.1-.4). The crest rails and back splats are embellished with gardrooning, leafy clusters and C-scrolls. The square seats are upholstered in a pinkish floral fabric. The upholstery is secured with brass tacks around the seat rail. Each chair is supported by four square legs connected by box-stretchers. The front two legs are carved with stop-fluting, while the back two are splayed at the bottom.
