Four Small Gray Painted Side Chairs

FOUR SMALL GRAY PAINTED SIDE CHAIRS (French, late 19th century) from the workshops of Jules Allard and Sons, with upholstery by Pregaldini, Paris. Original to Alva Vanderbilt’s bedroom at Marble House, the chairs have square seats upholstered in purple velvet with a silver appliqué of acanthus leaves around a trellis border, matching the larger side chairs PSNC.118.1 - .4. The arched crest rail is carved with curling foliate designs and centered with a cartouche shaped shield. The black splat has an open work shell design surrounded by acanthus leaves. The serpentine seat rail is carved with shells and trailing flowers. The chairs stand on four cabriole legs, the front two of which are carved with grotesque masks on the knees, the bottom of the legs are carved with shells above hoof shaped feet. The four legs are connected by an x-shaped cross stretcher with a raised flower head medallion at center.
