Four Louis XV Style Gray Painted High Backed Chairs

FOUR LOUIS XV STYLE GRAY PAINTED HIGH BACKED CHAIRS (French, late 19th century) from the workshops of Jules Allard and Sons with upholstery by Pregaldini, Paris. Original to Alva Vanderbilt’s bedroom at Marble House, the matching chairs have a rectangular arched back and square seat covered in purple velvet upholstery with a silver appliqué design of acanthus leaves around a trellis border. The seat back is trimmed with a matching purple fringe. The serpentine seat rail is carved with shells and trailing flowers. The chairs stand on four cabriole legs, the front two of which are carved with grotesque masks on the knees, the bottom of the legs are carved with shells above hoof shaped feet. The four legs are connected by an x-shaped cross stretcher with a raised flower head medallion at center.
