Description
FOUR SCULPTED GILT OAK BAS RELIEF PANELS (French, c. 1890) carved by sculptor Louis Ardisson (French, 1848-1930) for the decorating firm of Jules Allard and Sons. Installed in the ballroom of Marble House, the four panels present scenes from Greek mythology based on classical paintings. The panel frames are after those in the Galerie d’Apollon at the Louvre by Charles Le Brun.
.1 – Based after "The Triumph of Venus" by François Boucher, 1740, this panel depicts the goddess Venus rising from the sea in a shell accompanied by putti and sea nymphs.
.2 – Based after "The Abduction of Deianira by the Centaur Nessus" by Louis Jean François Lagrenée, 1755, this panel depicts the Deianira, the wife of Hercules, being carried away by Nessus who broke his promise of helping her cross the river. Hercules in the top left corner readies an arrow to shoot at Nessus.
.3 – Based after "Pan and Syrinx" by François Boucher, 1759, this panel depicts the wood nymph Syrinx being chased by the god Pan. Upon reaching the river Landon Syrinx is transformed into reeds by a river nymph to protect her from Pan’s pursuit.
.4 – Based after the painting "Le Triomphe des eaux" by Charles Le Brun, 1664-1677, the panel depicts the god Neptune and his wife Amphitrite seated in a shell chariot drawn by sea horses.
