Description
ONE LARGE SILVER CANDELABRUM BASE (English, 1849) by R & S Garrard & Co., Patton Street, London, after a 1716-1717 French model by Gilles-Claude Gouel. It is elaborately decorated with relief foliate designs. The central shaft is decorated with four applied mascarons representing Flora and Bacchus. Engraved around the top rim of the base is "Presented to Thomas W. Ward Esq. of Boston U.S. by the Partners of the Firm of Baring Brothers & Co. as a token of their sincere friendship and of their grateful sense of the ability judgment honor and integrity exhibited by him during a connection of 20 years London 12th April 1849 New York Yacht Club Admiral Cruise 1911 Commodores Club." Inscribed along the bottom side rim is "NY Yacht Club Annual Cruise 1911. Commodore's Cup Presented by: Commodore C. Ledyard Blair, Won by Vagrant." The bottom side rim is also marked "R. & S. GARRARD PANTON ST. LONDON" and impressed with their hallmarks. The London firm Garrard & Co. served as the Crown Jewelers from 1843 until 2007 and is responsible for the design of many sporting trophies, including the America’s Cup.
