Description
A LOUIS XV STYLE PATINATED BRONZE AND ORMOLU MANTEL CLOCK (French, 1889) by Henry Dasson et Cie, Paris, after a model by Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain (French, 1719-1791). A trumpeting elephant stands astride an oval, scrolled fretwork ormolu base. The timepiece rises from the elephant’s saddle surrounded by a chiseled ormolu cartouche topped frame. The white enamel dial is marked "Henry Dasson /A Paris." The rear of the base is signed "Henry Dasson et Cie / 1889."
Henry Dasson (French, 1825-1896) established his workshop at 106, rue Vielle du Temple, where he specialized in the production of furniture and bronze mounts. In 1871 he purchased the workshop and remaining stock of Charles-Guillaume Winckelsen. Dasson participated in the Paris 1878 Exposition Universelle where he received high praise, and was awarded the Grand Prix Artistique at the 1889 Exposition Universelle.
