Description
A FIVE-PIECE LOUIS XV STYLE PARLOR SUITE (French, c. 1892) from the workshop of Jules Allard and Sons, Paris. The gilt-wood suite is composed of one settee, PSNC.453.1, and four side chairs, PSNC.453.2-.5.
PSNC.453.1 - The settee has a caned back, sides, and seat. The curved crest-rail is carved with a shell design at center. The caned back has a framed circular panel. The padded armrests and loose tufted seat cushion are covered with solid green silk velvet upholstery rewoven by Prelle et Cie after the original. The cushion is ornamented with fleurettes covered in silver metallic thread. The arm rests supports are carved with scrolling acanthus leaf handles and bell-flowers. The seat rail is carved with a shell and foliate motif at center. The settee stands on four turned legs with carved foliate decoration of acanthus leaves and bell-flowers. The legs are connected by a block H-stretcher with a curve and raised foliate design at center.
PSNC.453.2-.5 – The matching side chairs have a caned seat and back. The molded crest-rail is carved with a shell motif at center. This shell motif is repeated beneath the caned back and on the seat rail. The seats have loose cushions covered with solid green silk velvet upholstery rewoven by Prelle et Cie after the original. The cushions are ornamented with fleurettes covered in silver metallic thread. The chairs stand on four turned legs with carved foliate decoration of acanthus leaves and bell-flowers. The legs are connected by a block H-stretcher with a curve and raised foliate design at center.
