Description
A CARVED RENAISSANCE STYLE ARMCHAIR (French, late 19th century) by Jules Allard and Sons and Gilbert Cuel with an elaborately carved walnut frame and rectangular caned seat panel. The raised crest-rail is carved with foliate designs, cornucopias, and torch shaped finials on either end. The pierced black splat is carved with a grotesque satyr mask, its hands gripping the curving foliate designs around it. The armrests connect to curved supports with carved lion head ends and scrolling foliate bases. The molded seat rail is carved with raised foliate designs and flower head capitals at the corners. The chair stands on four tapered fluted legs with acanthus leaves carved around the ends and terminate in bun feet. The legs are connected by a block H-stretcher with a foliate design at center. Originally part of the bedroom suite in Consuelo Vanderbilt’s bedroom at Marble House.
