Description
A PAIR OF CARVED LOUIS XIV STYLE WALNUT ARMCHAIRS (French, 18th century), the high rectangular backs, padded armrests, and seats of each chair are covered in a tapestry/needlework upholstery adhered with brass tacks. The petit-point back panels of the chairs date to a later period then the rest of the upholstery. The back panel of PSNC.401.2 depicts three women/goddesses sitting around a table. The back panels are surrounded by a foliate border. The armrests connect to s-shaped supports carved with acanthus leaves. The molded seat rails are carved with a motif of shells and trailing leaves. Each chair stands on four cabrioles legs that terminate in scroll feet. The front two legs are carved with acanthus leaves on the knees and above the feet.
