A Chippendale Style George II Mahogany Library Armchair

c. 1760

A CHIPPENDALE STYLE GEORGE II MAHOGANY LIBRARY ARMCHAIR (English, c. 1760) with a rectangular back, seat, and padded armrests covered in a later gros-point needlework. Incorporating 18th century petit-point panels the needlework covering the seat of the chair depicts a lady and her attendant in a landscape setting holding their hands over a flaming brazier, the back depicts a woman riding sidesaddle, the reverse of the chair is coved in red damask. The padded armrests lead to curved supports carved with acanthus leaves. The chair stands on four legs connected by a cross and back stretcher. The front two straight legs are carved with trailing leaves and have pierced curved brackets connecting to the bottom of the seat.
