Description
A LACE AND MOTHER-OF-PEARL FAN (French, c. 1900) signed H. Varenne. The mother-of-pearl sticks are inlaid with gold scrollwork and have a trailing vine motif of light and dark flowers. Floral patterned lace centers a hand painted central scene depicting two pairs of boating lovers wearing early 17th century clothing. The fan has a brass handle with diamond studs and two white silk tassels.
Housed in a gilt-wood frame the fan is accompanied by two calling cards engraved "Mr. and Mrs. Berwind / The Elms / 2 East 64th Street." Handwritten on the cards is the following message "Dear Daisy, I am sorry to send you my wedding souvenir so late in the day but I was in Europe when you were married – Best love + good wished HB -."
