Description
PORTRAIT OF MRS. JOSEPHINE BROOKS (American, c. 1870), the oil on canvas portrait depicts Mrs. Henry Mortimer Brooks (American, 1850-1920) at bust length against a grey/gold background. She wears a brown velvet dress with a grey chiffon scarf and a lace jabot, a necklace of multi-colored pearls adorns her neck. The canvas is housed in its original gold leaf and black accented square frame with an oval opening, the corners of the frame are accented with an applied acorn and oak leaf motif, a beaded band surrounds the central oval. Mrs. Brooks and her husband resided at Rockhurst, built by Peabody & Sterns in 1891, on Bellevue Ave. in Newport.
