PORTRAIT OF MR. EDWARD J. BERWIND (America, May 1938), the oil on canvas portrait depicts Edward J. Berwind (American, 1848-1936), the founder of the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company and owner of The Elms. Shown in profile at bust length against a dark background, Mr. Berwind wears a black suit with a matching tie adorned with a pearl pin and a high white collar, his hair and distinctive mustache are both white. This portrait is original to The Elms collection and was given by Julia A. Berwind, Mr. Beriwind’s sister, to the Superintendent of The Elms Mr. Michael Pignatelli.
