Description
A suite of chairs (French, 1895) by the design firm Jules Allard and Sons. All have been re-upholstered in green floral silk damask, edged with a wide embroidered braid. All but the settee (.1a-c) have a gold tasseled fringe hanging from the seat rail. The chair suite is composed of:
.1a-c - A Louis XV style carved walnut upholstered settee with partial gilding. The settee has a low rectangular backrest with a raised center section, molded armrests which end in scrolled terminals carved with foliage, a rectangular over-stuff seat, and a seat rail carved with cabochons. The whole is raised on eight urn shaped legs with gadrooned tops and turned toes, the legs are joined by stretchers. The upholstery is outlined with embroidered braiding. Large gold tassels hang from the center back cushion. Two similarly upholstered square pillows go with the settee.
.2-.3 - A pair of Louis XV style carved walnut armchairs with square upholstered backs, molded and shaped armrests with scrolled terminals carved with foliage, a pierced front rail carved with scrolls and foliage. They rest on four turned and blocked legs carved with flower-heads, the legs are joined by a turned and floral carved H-stretcher. The frame of the chair is decorated with gilt highlights.
.4-.5 - A pair of bergeres in the late 17th century style. The upholstered backs have a shaped crest flanked by low armrests and square seats. They are raised on four baluster legs with fluted decoration and bun feet, the legs are connected by a flat H-stretcher. The legs and stretcher are decorated with gilt highlights.
.6-.11 – Six walnut side chairs in the late 17th century style, with upholstered rectangular backs that have a shaped crest, and square seats. The side chairs are raised on four baluster legs with fluted decoration, the legs are joined by a flat H-stretcher. The legs and stretcher are decorated with gilt highlights
