Description
A SET OF FOUR OIL ON WOOD PANELS REPRESENTING THE FOUR ELEMENTS (French, c. 1892) from the studio of Jules Allard and Sons, Paris. Painted on the mahogany doors leading from the Morning Room into the Great Hall of The Breakers, the grisaille panels are each titled after a different element: L’Air (Air), La Terre (Earth), Le Feu (Fire), and L’Eau (Water). The elements are represented as putti holding related objects. Decorative urns are painted at the top of the panels and stylized scrolling foliage surrounds the scene.
